Exemptions

 

A property tax exemption is a reduction on a real or personal property assessment authorized by statute. The following exemptions are available in Sterling:

 

Blind: There is a $3000 exemption for persons that meet the state’s requirements for blindness and can provide such proof to the assessor.

 

Totally Disabled: There is a $1000 property tax exemption for people 100% disabled. Applications and proof must be filed with the assessor.


Veterans: There are various exemptions available to veterans and/or active duty service members; such as the basic veteran’s exemption, disabled veteran’s exemption, and the additional veteran’s exemption. To qualify for these exemptions, a person must be a Connecticut resident and it must be applied to a property that they own, have life use of, or that is held in trust for them as of the October 1st date. They all must have been honorably discharged. There are service duration and conditions of military separations that apply to all but disabled veterans. Proper documentation must be provided and filed prior to the October 1 st deadline. Honorable Discharge documentation may be a person’s DD-214, Report of Separation, Certificate of Service or other form. There are also exemptions for Active Duty Serviceman.

 

Homeowner's Program: This is a program for the elderly or totally disabled. To qualify a person must be 65 as of the December 31 st preceding the date on which they will file for tax relief and meet income qualifications set by the state. If they are totally disabled they must be receiving permanent total disability benefits from one of the following: Social Security Administration, or a Federal, State or Local Government retirement or disability plan. This program begins February 1 st and ends May 15th. Applications are filed biennially.
