INTRODUCTION


    
The office of the Town Clerk is one of the oldest in government.  Maintaining and preserving the records of the Town is its primary function.  With the passage of time, the office has been delegated many other tasks such as Registrar of Vital Statistics, Election Officer, and Agent for the State of Connecticut.

 

 

 

 

ACTIVITIES & SERVICES


    
The Town Clerk maintains many of the Towns records, both old and new, and offers a diversity of services to the public.  Services in which the office is involved include:

 

Ñ     Issue Marriage & Civil Union Licenses

Ñ     Issue certified copies of Vital Records

Ñ     Issue dog licenses

Ñ     Issue hunting & fishing licenses

Ñ     Provide permits, applications, stamps & guides for hunters

Ñ     Provide applications for boating certificates

Ñ     Voter registration

Ñ     Issue absentee ballots

Ñ     Record veteran discharges   (tax relief)

Ñ     Provide copies of council minutes, boards & commission membership, meeting notices & agendas

Ñ     Provide access to land records & maps
 


DOG LICENSES


    
A dog license must be purchased when the dog is 6 months old and annually renewed thereafter during the month of June.  A current valid rabies certificate must be presented at the time of licensing.  If the dog has been spayed or neutered, a certificate from the veterinarian must also be presented.  A person who moves to Sterling whose dog was previously licensed in another town, within the current year, may transfer the registration for $1.00.  A lost tag can be replaced for $0.50.

SPORTING LICENSES & BOATING



    
Fishing, hunting and combination licenses are valid for a calendar year.  Bow permits are purchased through the state D.E.P. but applications are available through the Clerk’s Office.  First time hunters must present a Connecticut hunter’s safety certificate when purchasing a license.  Others must have a hunting license, recognized by the State of Connecticut which was issued within the past five years. Pheasant tags, state bird stamps and HIP permits may also be purchased at the Clerk’s office.  Applications to hunt deer and turkey along with hunting and fishing guides are also available.  Archery permit applications are available in this office as well as applications for state boating certification. Boating guides are also available from the clerk.

MARRIAGE  & CIVIL UNION LICENSES & VITAL STATISTICS

 

 

     Marriage & Civil Union Licenses must be obtained in either the town where the ceremony is to take place, or the town of residence of either party.  The Ceremony must be performed within 65 days from the date of issuance.  Certified copies of vital events (birth, marriage, civil union, death) that occurred in Sterling are available from the Town Clerk for a fee.  Information pertaining to vital events and genealogy begin with the year 1794.  Prior to that year genealogists will find information in the Town of Voluntown.
