The Town of Sterling follows the State Building Code, Chapter 354 of the General Statutes of the State of Connecticut, as Amended.
If you are planning a construction or demolition project in the Town of Sterling, please contact the Sterling Building Official for a determination of whether a Building Permit is required or if the proposed work is exempted under Section R105.2 of the Connecticut Building Code, amended 2013.
Owners of structures containing 2 or more rental units must register the units with the Building Official. Before renting a vacant or vacated unit, the owner must obtain a Permit for Multiple Dwelling Unit Occupancy. Details of the registration and inspection program can be found in the Town Ordinances.
Even if a Building Permit is not required for your proposed project, all Buildings, Structures and Uses proposed to be constructed or implemented upon property location in the Town of Sterling DO require review and approval of a Zoning Permit by the Sterling Zoning Enforcement Officer prior to construction, and must be in conformance with the requirement of the Sterling Zoning Regulations in order to be approved.
ALL proposed construction projects DO require review by the Sterling Wetlands Enforcement Officer to determine whether the proposed activity is “regulated” under jurisdiction of the Sterling Inland Wetlands & Watercourses Commission.
Residents are also advised to contact the Northeast District Department of Health for a determination of permitting requirements related to the Connecticut Public Health Code.
